Keeping Greenwich Safe Means Putting Accountability Back at the Center

Michael Mason

I am honored to have been endorsed for State Representative by the Connecticut State Fraternal Order of Police, and I thank the organization and its members for their confidence and support.

In its endorsement letter, the Connecticut State FOP cited my commitment to “public safety, the law enforcement community, and the citizens of Connecticut,” and my willingness to engage on issues affecting officers and their families. Those are commitments I intend to carry with me to Hartford.

Greenwich is fortunate to be one of Connecticut’s safest communities. But safety is not something we simply inherit. It requires good policing, responsible policies, and a justice system that takes crime seriously.

Connecticut’s statewide crime numbers have improved, and that progress should be recognized. But statistics do not tell the whole story. For a business owner facing repeated theft, a family whose home has been burglarized, or a victim who sees the same offender return to the streets, public safety is personal.

We need a justice system that holds people accountable while recognizing the important role of rehabilitation and treatment. Someone struggling with addiction may need treatment, and a young person who makes a serious mistake may deserve an opportunity to change. But repeat offenders cannot simply cycle through the system without meaningful consequences.

Victims deserve accountability, too.

That is especially important when addressing organized theft, repeat offenders, and the fentanyl crisis. We need prevention and treatment for those struggling with addiction, alongside strong enforcement against those who manufacture, traffic, and profit from deadly drugs. Treatment without enforcement is incomplete. Enforcement without treatment is incomplete. We need both.

We must also support the officers responsible for enforcing our laws through recruitment, retention, training, modern technology, and the resources necessary to do their jobs safely and professionally.

The FOP endorsement reinforces why this matters. The men and women who serve in law enforcement understand the challenges of recruiting and retaining qualified officers and the sacrifices their families make alongside them. Their endorsement recognizes my willingness to listen to those concerns and work on practical solutions.

But an endorsement is not a substitute for a plan.

As State Representative, I will support policies that strengthen local departments, improve coordination among jurisdictions, target organized and repeat offenders, and ensure victims are not forgotten.

My guiding principle is simple:

The law should work for the people who obey it.

That does not mean abandoning reform. It means judging reforms on whether they actually make communities safer.

Greenwich residents should not have to choose between compassion and public safety. We can provide treatment for people who need it, rehabilitation to those willing to use it, and meaningful consequences for those who repeatedly put others at risk.

I am grateful to the Connecticut State Fraternal Order of Police for its endorsement and for the work its members do every day.

Public safety is not a slogan. It is a responsibility. And government should never lose sight of that.
